JOHANNESBURG WATER ANNOUNCES FURTHER WATER CUTS

Residents in the Greater Ivory Park areas continue to face worsening water challenges as Johannesburg Water confirmed that the President Park Reservoir is under severe strain and at critically low levels.
In a statement issued on Wednesday afternoon, Johannesburg Water announced that to rebuild capacity, the reservoir outlet will be closed from 15:00 today until 04:00 tomorrow morning, 18 September 2025.
The utility attributed the crisis to a combination of increased demand, reduced supply, and infrastructure constraints, which have left the system unable to cope.
“Johannesburg Water is actively monitoring the situation and implementing necessary interventions to support system recovery,” the statement read.
Alternative Measures
The entity said it would continue responding to bursts and leaks to prevent further losses. For areas without water, alternative supply will be arranged through stationary water tanks, to be deployed in line with lists received from Ward Councillors.
Call for Cooperation
Johannesburg Water further appealed to residents in lower-lying areas who still have access to water to use it sparingly, in order to relieve pressure on higher-lying zones, which are more severely affected.
“Your cooperation in reducing water consumption is critical during this period,” the utility added.
Background
This latest development comes amid weeks of severe water shortages in Ivory Park, Kaalfontein, and Ebony Park — shortages that have already triggered widespread community protests, road closures, and school disruptions.
Johannesburg Water says further updates will be provided should operational changes become necessary.
