19 MILLION DRAIN UPGRADE LAUNCHED TO FIGHT FLOODING & DROWNING IN IVORY PARK
A new R6.9 million infrastructure project is officially underway in Ivory Park as the City of Johannesburg, through the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA), moves to convert hazardous open stormwater drains into a safer closed drainage system in Ivory Park.
The sod-turning ceremony took place on Tuesday, 10 June 2025, and was led by the City’s MMC for Transport, Cllr. Kenny Kunene, and JRA CEO Mr. Zweli Nyathi, alongside other JRA board members.
The upgrade is aimed at improving water flow, reducing flooding, and most importantly, preventing tragic drownings that often occur during the rainy season.
“In the past year, we’ve witnessed tragic incidents of people, especially children, drowning during heavy rains because of these open channels. It’s something we are preventing from happening again,” MMC Kunene said. “The City’s priority is not only to serve communities but to also create a safe environment for all residents and road users.”
The first targeted areas are Hailie Silas Street, where 147 metres of drainage will be converted, and Poopedi Street, covering another 170 metres. The full project is expected to be completed by September 2025.
The project includes:
• Replacing open drains with closed concrete systems
• Excavation and preparation of drainage beds
• Installation of concrete stormwater pipes and manholes
• Reinstatement of topsoil
• Erection of palisade fencing and concrete ramps
Beyond safety and infrastructure, the JRA has committed to local economic empowerment by hiring four SMMEs and five Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) workers.
JRA CEO Mr. Zweli Nyathi emphasized: “As with all projects of the JRA, creating job opportunities and employing local labour is a priority.”
The closed system will also help control floodwater, which can carry hazardous waste and chemicals from surrounding areas into residential zones, posing serious health risks.
