Gauteng Police Commissioner Lt-Gen, Tommy Mthombeni, has warned that property owners who knowingly rent to undocumented foreign nationals could face fines of R10,000 per undocumented person and possible criminal charges under South Africa’s immigration laws.

Speaking ahead of the planned 30 June demonstrations, Mthombeni said police operations will target both undocumented foreign nationals and anyone found harbouring or employing them illegally.

To maintain law and order, more than 13,000 SAPS officers will be deployed across Gauteng, backed by 217,000 private security personnel, 2,000 Gauteng Traffic Police officers, 8,000 crime prevention wardens, drones, helicopters and over 33,000 CCTV cameras.

Police say they are fully prepared to deal with any violence, looting or intimidation while protecting the constitutional rights of all residents.

Lieutenant General Mthombeni says they are aware of key hotspots – where anti-illegal immigration protests are expected to take place across Gauteng.

The General also said that the soldiers have been placed on standby, fully prepared to intervene at a moment’s notice if the situation escalates
