The rape case against Edward Steven Zunguza, a suspended mathematics teacher from Ivory Park Secondary School, has been postponed once again, with the matter now set to return to the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on 13 August 2026.

Zunguza appeared in court on Friday, 3 July 2026, where the case was postponed for further investigation. He remains out on bail, subject to strict conditions imposed by the court.

The 37-year-old educator was arrested on 4 March 2026 by members of Norkem Park SAPS in Birchleigh North.

He is accused of raping a 17-year-old Grade 12 learner from Ivory Park Secondary School in an incident that allegedly occurred on 25 December 2025.

According to information previously released by the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE), the learner was in Grade 11 at the time of the alleged incident. It is alleged that the educator had been offering the learner private mathematics lessons outside official school hours at his residence, where the alleged rape is said to have taken place.

The matter was formally reported to the school by the learner’s mother on 2 March 2026, after the learner allegedly disclosed the incident. The department also indicated that the learner had previously attempted to report the matter after allegedly experiencing continued inappropriate behaviour from the educator at school.

Following his arrest, the GDE launched its own internal investigation into the allegations and offered counselling and therapeutic support to the learner and her family.

Zunguza was granted bail during a formal bail hearing on 17 March 2026.

During the proceedings, he denied the allegations and informed the court that he intends to plead not guilty. He also stated that he is fully cooperating with the investigating officer.

In an affidavit before the court, Zunguza said he would not attempt to contact the complainant, her guardian or any witnesses and maintained that he does not pose a danger to the community.

The State informed the court that the complainant did not oppose bail.

The court granted bail subject to several conditions, including that Zunguza:

  • May not directly or indirectly contact the complainant, her family or any witnesses.
  • May not come within 50 metres of Ivory Park Secondary School.
  • Must comply with all bail conditions, failing which his bail may be revoked and he could be arrested.

He remains out on bail under these conditions.

Since his arrest, the case has been postponed on several occasions.

On 6 May 2026, the matter was postponed pending a forensic report compiled by a social worker.

When the matter returned to court on 3 July 2026, it was postponed again, this time to 13 August 2026, to allow for further investigation.

As with all criminal proceedings, Edward Steven Zunguza is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.

KAE News will continue to follow the case and provide updates as it returns to the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on 13 August 2026.
