Ivory Park Secondary School mathematics teacher Edward Steven Zunguza has been granted bail during his formal bail application at the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 17 March 2026.

The 37-year-old educator faces a charge of rape following allegations that he raped a 17-year-old learner from the school in an incident that allegedly took place in December 2025.

During proceedings, Zunguza denied the allegations and informed the court of his intention to plead not guilty.

He further told the court that he is cooperating with the investigating officer and assured the court that he would not attempt to contact the complainant, her guardian or any witnesses.

Zunguza also maintained that he is not a danger to the community.

Bail conditions

The court granted bail with strict conditions, including:
• He may not directly or indirectly contact the complainant, her family, or any witnesses
• He is prohibited from coming within 50 metres of the school
• Any violation of these conditions may result in his immediate arrest

The State indicated that the complainant did not oppose bail.

Zunguza will remain in custody until bail is paid, after which he will be released under the set conditions.

The matter has been postponed to 6 May 2026 for further investigation.
