RABIE RIDGE FAMILY MOURNS DEATH OF METRO POLICE TRAINEE
The Rabie Ridge community is mourning the loss of 24-year-old Marvellous Michael Nyambi, who tragically died after suffering heat exhaustion during the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) trainee recruitment programme.
Nyambi had been participating in the physically demanding selection process on 28 August 2025 at Ruimsig Stadium. According to JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla, Nyambi became ill due to extreme heat and collapsed during the exercises, which included running, push-ups, and scaling a training wall.
Emergency Management Services (EMS) personnel attended to him on site before transporting him to Yusuf Dadoo Hospital. Sadly, Nyambi passed away the following day, 29 August 2025.
He is remembered as a young man full of potential, determined to serve and protect as part of the metro police force. His death has left family, friends, and the Rabie Ridge community devastated.
The recruitment programme claimed another life days later. On 1 September, 26-year-old Zwelethu Tekete from Braamfischerville Phase 1 collapsed and was found unresponsive. Despite attempts by EMS officers to resuscitate him with CPR, Tekete was declared dead at the scene.
“The wellbeing and safety of all candidates and officers remain our priority.” said JMPD spokesperson, Xolani Fihla.
The JMPD is currently processing thousands of applications as it seeks to recruit 500 new trainees for its 2026 intake. Successful applicants will undergo 18 months of training at the metro police academy, with a stipend provided during their contract period.
