The Executive Mayor of the City of Ekurhuleni, Alderman Nkosindiphile Xhakaza, has announced a major reshuffle of the Mayoral Committee (MMC), introducing a new executive team with immediate effect.

The changes follow consultations among political parties represented in council and form part of what the City calls the Ekurhuleni Governance Framework an agreement aimed at stabilising the municipality and strengthening service delivery under the Government of Local Unity (EGLU).

Xolani Khumalo appointed to Community Safety

The biggest talking point from the reshuffle is the appointment of Xolani Khumalo, widely known from the anti-drug TV show Sizok’thola, who will now serve as MMC responsible for Community Safety representing Action SA.

Khumalo rose to prominence for his controversial and hands-on approach in confronting drug dealers in communities across Gauteng. His appointment signals the City’s intention to take a tougher stance on crime, drugs, and lawlessness issues that residents in townships like Tembisa frequently complain about.

Community Safety in Ekurhuleni oversees:

• Metro Police (EMPD)

• Crime prevention programmes

• Bylaw enforcement

• Coordination with SAPS and community patrollers

Residents will be watching closely to see whether his activist-style approach can translate into structured municipal law-enforcement operations.
