BREAKING: R126 Fixed Electricity Tariff Suspended in Tembisa
After a tense and chaotic morning in Tembisa, Ekurhuleni Mayor Nkosindiphile Xhakaza has announced the temporary suspension of the controversial R126 fixed electricity tariff charge.
Speaking directly to residents at the Rabasotho Community Hall on Monday afternoon, the Mayor said the suspension will remain in effect until further consultations take place with key stakeholders, including NERSA and Eskom.
“We’ve heard your concerns. The fixed charge is suspended while we engage with all relevant parties,” said Xhakaza.
“I also encourage you to continue signing the petition. It will be presented before Council.”
The announcement came after a day of widespread protest action, during which residents blocked all entrances and exits to the township in protest of the new fixed tariff, which they say would burden struggling households.
Tensions boiled over earlier when protesters blocked the mayor’s convoy and banged on one of his vehicles. EMPD used rubber bullets and tear gas to disperse crowds in the morning.
By the afternoon, calm had returned to most parts of Tembisa and roads had largely been cleared.
The suspension is temporary, and the outcome of ongoing engagements will determine the way forward.
