OVER 1,090 SUSPECTS ARRESTED IN KAE AND REST OF GAUTENG DURING OPERATION SHANELA
The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Gauteng conducted a significant crime-fighting operation over the weekend of Friday, 23 May to Sunday, 25 May 2025, resulting in the arrest of more than 1,090 suspects.
Operation Shanela, a collaborative initiative involving SAPS, Metro Police Departments, Traffic Departments, the Department of Home Affairs, Community Safety, private security companies, Community Police Forums, and Community in Blue, aims to enhance police visibility and assert the authority of the state by addressing serious and violent crimes. 
Key Highlights from the Operation:
• 732 Wanted Suspects Apprehended: Detectives arrested individuals implicated in serious crimes such as murder, rape, armed robbery, sexual assault, and car hijacking.
• 142 Arrests for Gender-Based Violence and Crimes Against Vulnerable Groups: A significant focus was placed on addressing gender-based violence (GBV) and crimes against children and vulnerable individuals.
• Roadblocks and Compliance Checks: The operation included setting up roadblocks to intercept illegal goods and substances and to identify stolen or hijacked vehicles. Police recovered drugs, a suspected stolen vehicle, and ammunition.
• Arrests for Driving Under the Influence and Immigration Offenses: Over 130 individuals were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, and 140 illegal immigrants were detained.
Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni, the Provincial Commissioner of Gauteng, expressed satisfaction with the collaborative efforts of various law enforcement agencies and government departments. He emphasized the importance of community involvement in crime prevention and urged residents to report criminal activities through the Crime Stop number (08600 10111) or anonymously via the MySAPS App.
Operation Shanela continues to be a critical component of SAPS’s strategy to combat crime and ensure public safety across the province.
