GRADE 2 LEARNER DIES IN OPEN PIT

A seven-year-old boy from Noordwyk Primary School, Nsuku Mabunda, has tragically passed away after drowning in a pit in President Park, Midrand, on Friday, 10 October 2025.

According to family members, Nsuku had left home around 13:00 with a group of friends. Nsuku fell on a 10-metre-deep pit filled with water, located along a footpath commonly used as a shortcut between President Park and Allandale View.

It remains unclear who owns or is responsible for the pit.

One of Nsuku’s friends ran to alert his mother about the incident. In shock and panic, she asked Nsuku’s uncle, Xolani Hadebe, to accompany her to the scene.

Hadebe managed to retrieve Nsuku from the 10m deep pit, filled with water. He said they did CPR before rushing him to the Ebony Park Clinic. According to Hadebe, while on their way, just a few metres from the clinic, Nsuku coughed and sadly passed away in his hands.

Hadebe described Nsuku as a brave and loving child who was full of life and curiosity.

On social media, Noordwyk Primary School shared a heartfelt message following the tragic news:

“Our hearts go out to Nsuku’s family, siblings, and friends during this heartbreaking time. As a school community, we are deeply saddened by this loss and stand together in grief and remembrance of a bright young soul who will be dearly missed.”
