ROADS CLEAR IN TEMBISA AFTER SHUTDOWN OVER ELECTRICITY DISCONNECTIONS
Roads across Tembisa have reopened after a shutdown protest sparked by electricity disconnection notices issued to residents by the City of Ekurhuleni.
TEMBISA — Roads across Tembisa have reopened and traffic has returned to normal following yesterday’s shutdown protest over electricity disconnections issued to some households.
Residents had taken to the streets after the City of Ekurhuleni intensified credit-control measures, including warning letters and electricity disconnections to defaulting properties.
Several roads in and around the township were affected during the protest as community members voiced frustration over what many described as harsh enforcement of municipal electricity debt collection.
However, the situation has now de-escalated.
The Executive Mayor of the City of Ekurhuleni, Alderman Nkosindiphile Xhakaza, has since reversed the earlier decision, prompting community leaders to suspend the protest action.
Following the mayor’s intervention, community representatives confirmed that residents would pause the shutdown while monitoring the City’s next steps.
Leaders say they will continue engaging with municipal authorities regarding the electricity disconnection notices and credit-control measures affecting households.
For now, calm has returned to Tembisa, and motorists are able to move freely on roads across the township.
