MIDRAND RANKS SIXTH NATIONALLY FOR DRUNK DRIVING
Midrand Police Station ranked fourth in Gauteng and sixth nationally for driving under the influence cases recorded between April and June 2026.
Midrand has emerged as one of South Africa’s hotspots for motorists driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, according to the latest available crime statistics.
Midrand Police Station ranked fourth in Gauteng and sixth nationally for driving under the influence cases recorded between April and June 2026, according to SAPS first-quarter 2026/27 crime statistics cited by the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD).
The figures have raised fresh concerns about road safety in Midrand, particularly as the area carries large volumes of traffic along major routes connecting Johannesburg, Pretoria, Tembisa and surrounding communities.
JMPD says most alcohol-related arrests take place between 18:00 and midnight, with the highest concentration recorded between 20:00 and 23:00.
The City’s law enforcement agency says more than 26,000 motorists were arrested for drunk driving across Johannesburg between 2023 and the end of 2025, averaging approximately 9,000 arrests per year.
Despite regular roadblocks and law-enforcement operations, JMPD says enforcement alone cannot solve the problem and has called for greater public education and a change in motorists’ behaviour.
Driving while under the influence puts not only the driver at risk but passengers, pedestrians and other road users.
Motorists who intend to drink are encouraged to arrange alternative transport, use a designated sober driver or avoid driving altogether.
With Midrand now ranking among the country’s leading areas for DUI cases, authorities are expected to continue conducting roadblocks and other enforcement operations across the area.
Don’t drink and drive. One decision can cost a life.
