Daveyton (Vutha) – A Toyota Siyaya taxi crashed into a stationary tyre repair container in Daveyton on Friday afternoon, leaving 16 people injured and hospitalised.

The crash comes just days after another Toyota Siyaya taxi was involved in a deadly crash in Midrand, where five people lost their lives. The Midrand taxi driver was charged with culpable homicide and remains in Tembisa Hospital.

In the Daveyton crash, the taxi was carrying 16 occupants when it crashed at the intersection of Eiselen and Sibeko Streets at around 14:50 on Friday, 25 September.

According to the City of Ekurhuleni, the taxi reportedly crashed into the stationary tyre repair containers.

When rescue teams arrived from Etwatwa Fire Station, the driver was trapped behind the steering wheel. The other 15 passengers had already been helped out of the taxi by members of the public.

Fire and rescue personnel safely freed the driver from the vehicle.

Two people, the male driver and a female passenger have sustained critical injuries and were given urgent medical attention.

Two other passengers, an adult and a 15-year-old boy, suffered serious injuries but were in a stable condition.

The remaining 12 passengers sustained minor injuries. All 16 injured occupants were transported to various medical facilities across Ekurhuleni.

The people inside the tyre repair containers were not injured.

It is alleged that the taxi was travelling at high speed and that its braking system failed as it approached the intersection. This has not yet been confirmed and will form part of the investigation.

The scene was handed over to law enforcement officers, who began investigations into the cause of the crash.
