Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia conducted an oversight visit to Ekurhuleni, including Kempton Park and Tembisa Police stations on Friday 25 September 2026, as authorities continue investigating the deaths of women whose bodies have been discovered across the metro.

The visit comes amid heightened concern over the deaths of nine (9) women in Ekurhuleni, with police investigating whether there are links between the cases.

Cachalia, accompanied by Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi, Deputy Police Minister Cassel Mathale, senior SAPS leadership and Ekurhuleni officials, received briefings on policing operations and the challenges facing local stations.

At Kempton Park Police Station, the delegation inspected the Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) desks and Victim Friendly Rooms, focusing on the support available to victims and the resources required by officials.

Operational challenges raised included shortages of personnel, furniture and technology, inadequate infrastructure and problems with the Community Service Centre landline, which affects communication with the public.

The delegation also identified the concentration of liquor outlets as a concern, with GBVF, domestic violence and alcohol-related violence highlighted among the issues affecting communities.

The delegation later proceeded to Tembisa, where Station Commander Brigadier Cyril Nkuna presented an overview of crime in the area. GBVF, domestic violence and illegal liquor outlets were again highlighted as key concerns.

The oversight visit follows a series of high-level interventions by government and SAPS as investigators work to establish the circumstances surrounding the women’s deaths. SAPS has deployed a multidisciplinary team and additional resources to the investigation.

SAPS top management committed to addressing the operational challenges raised by station commanders and following up on the matters identified during the visit.
