An intelligence-driven operation in Kaalfontein Extension 23 has led to the arrest of a 23-year-old man and the recovery of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

The operation was conducted at around 23:00 on Wednesday, 26 August 2026, by members of the Ivory Park SAPS Task Team, Gauteng Traffic Police, Ekurhuleni District Crime Intelligence and Safeguard Risk Services.

Police had received information about a suspect allegedly in possession of a firearm and believed to be linked to armed robberies in Kaalfontein and Ivory Park.

The team went to the suspect’s home, where he initially allegedly directed officers to other addresses when questioned about the firearm. Police said he later admitted that the firearm was at his own residence.

A search of the room reportedly resulted in the recovery of a black-and-silver 9mm firearm with its serial number filed off, two live .38 Special rounds and an empty 9mm cartridge.

The suspect was arrested and taken to Ivory Park Police Station, where he is facing charges relating to the possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

Ekurhuleni Acting District Commissioner Brigadier Mbongeni Ngcobo commended the law enforcement teams for their swift response, saying operations such as these are important in tackling the proliferation of illegal firearms in the district.

Police investigations are continuing.
