BREAKING NEWS: NO PROVINCE-WIDE TAXI SHUTDOWN
The South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) Gauteng has confirmed that there will be no province-wide taxi shutdown. Taxi operations across Gauteng will continue as normal on Friday, 29 August 2025, except in parts of Ekurhuleni, where discussions are still ongoing.
This clarification comes after services in Ekurhuleni were halted on Thursday due to disputes over vehicle impoundments, which left many commuters stranded. Reports of a possible province-wide shutdown caused confusion and concern earlier in the day.
SANTACO Gauteng said it regrets the inconvenience caused and assured commuters that the situation only affects Ekurhuleni, not the rest of Gauteng.
For KAE commuters, this means that Ivory Park Taxi Association (IPTA) taxis will operate as normal on Friday.
The council also confirmed that it is in ongoing talks with the Gauteng Provincial Government and the National Transport Ministry to resolve the issues in Ekurhuleni speedily and amicably.
SANTACO reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring a smooth and reliable flow of transport across the province and promised to provide updates on the Ekurhuleni situation once a decision has been reached.
