EKURHULENI MAYOR ANNOUNCES NEW MMC TEAM AS ACTIONSA AND EFF REJECT EXECUTIVE ROLES
The Executive Mayor of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality, Nkosindiphile Xhakaza, has officially introduced a revised Mayoral Committee (MMC) following a dramatic 24 hours of political developments in the metro.
The mayor welcomed the newly appointed MMCs and said the team will work to serve residents and improve service delivery across the city.
Confirmed Members of the Mayoral Committee
The newly confirmed executive now consists of:
1. Cllr Jean Sthato – Metro Utilities (Trading) Services
2. Cllr Nomadlozi Nkosi – Metro Operations and Maintenance
3. Cllr Dino Peterson – Development Planning and Real Estate
4. Cllr Lindiwe Mnguni – Roads and Transport
5. Cllr Mzayifani Ngwenya – Community Safety
6. Cllr Siphumule Ntombela – Corporate Shared Services
7. Cllr Jongizizwe Dlabathi – Finance and Strategy
The city says the new committee is expected to strengthen governance and drive development programmes for communities throughout Ekurhuleni.
ActionSA rejects Khumalo appointment
However, ActionSA, led by Herman Mashaba, rejected the appointment less than 24 hours after it was announced.
The party confirmed Khumalo is affiliated with ActionSA but stated it had not agreed to join the Ekurhuleni administration and had declined all requests to participate in the mayoral committee. The party said it would instead focus on contesting the upcoming local government elections rather than joining the coalition government.
As a result, Khumalo will not serve as an MMC.
EFF also declines to participate
In a further development, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) also announced it would not be part of the reconfigured executive.
The party said the mayor had removed some of its councillors from the previous committee and changed key portfolios, and it has therefore declined to participate in the Mayoral Committee. The EFF indicated it will now serve from the opposition benches in council while holding the administration accountable.
KAE News will continue to monitor any further changes to the mayoral committee and how the new leadership affects daily life in local communities
