SUSPECT KILLED BY BOMB BLAST DURING CASH-IN-TRANSIT HEIST IN TEMBISA

Police have confirmed that a cash-in-transit robber was killed during the brazen cash-in-transit (CIT) heist in Phomolong, Tembisa, on Monday morning, 27 July 2026.

The incident occurred at approximately 07:49 at the corner of Modderfontein and Masala roads.

According to preliminary information, a Fidelity cash van carrying three (3) security officers was travelling towards Phomolong when it was ambushed by two to three vehicles.

“One of the suspect vehicles, believed to be a white VW Golf 6, blocked the cash van while heavily armed suspects, carrying rifles, confronted the security guards.” said Captain Neldah Sekgobela, the spokesperson of the SAPS.

It is alleged that one of the suspects planted explosives on the cash van while other suspects fired several shots and ordered motorists to turn around and leave the area.

The cash van was then blown open, and the suspects fled with an undisclosed amount of cash.

The suspect who allegedly planted the explosives was killed in the blast and died at the scene. His identity has not yet been established.

The three Fidelity security officers sustained minor injuries and shock and were treated at the scene.

During the robbery, the suspects also stole firearms belonging to the security officers, including:

• 2 x rifles
• 2 x hand weapons
• A pistol

A large police contingent, including SAPS, the Tactical Response Team (TRT), Crime Scene Investigators (CSI), the Provincial Local Criminal Record Centre (LCRC), and the Explosives Unit, responded to the scene. The area remains cordoned off while investigations continue.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area around Modderfontein and Masala roads until the scene has been cleared.
