CALM RESTORED IN TEMBISA
Calm has returned to Tembisa after a shutdown protest over electricity disconnection notices ended following intervention by Ekurhuleni Mayor Nkosindiphile Xhakaza.
TEMBISA — Calm has returned to Tembisa after community tensions over electricity disconnection notices prompted a Tembisa shutdown protest on Monday.
The situation de-escalated following intervention by the City of Ekurhuleni’s Executive Mayor, Alderman Nkosindiphile Xhakaza, together with City Manager Kagiso Lerutla, who announced a set of immediate relief measures aimed at assisting struggling households.
In a statement issued by the City of Ekurhuleni, officials confirmed that credit-control actions affecting vulnerable residents would be temporarily stopped while longer-term solutions are being worked on.
The announcement resulted in the suspension of protest action, allowing roads across the township to reopen and traffic to return to normal.
Municipal workers have since been deployed to clear debris and rocks that were placed on roads during the shutdown protest, helping restore movement in and around the township.
The protest had been sparked by concerns over electricity disconnection notices issued to some households, which residents said were affecting families already struggling with rising living costs.
According to the City, engagement with community leaders will continue as electricity restoration begins and qualifying households receive relief measures.
Officials say the municipality remains committed to listening to residents and implementing practical solutions to address electricity challenges in the township.
