CRIME DRAMA LIKE THE MOVIES UNFOLDS IN KAALFONTEIN

Kaalfontein residents witnessed a dramatic police chase on Friday, 08 August 2025, when members of the Johannesburg Flying Squad pursued a black BMW X5 allegedly involved in an attempted truck hijacking in the Sandton area earlier in the day.

The high-speed chase began in Midrand and ended near Kaalfontein Corner, where the suspects abandoned the BMW and fled on foot into the Themba Khoza Informal Settlement. Two police helicopters were deployed to assist in the search and shots were fired. No casualties reported.

Inside the abandoned vehicle, police recovered:
• Two firearms with magazines loaded with ammunition
• Blue police lights
• An SAPS reflector jacket

Preliminary investigations revealed that the BMW X5 had been hijacked in Germiston last month, and one of the recovered firearms was stolen in Ivory Park.

Police believe the suspects are part of a syndicate behind multiple truck hijackings. Their modus operandi involves posing as police officers, pulling trucks over, hijacking them, and making off with the goods.

The search for the suspects is ongoing.
