FIREWORKS BY-LAWS AND SAFETY RULES AHEAD OF NEW YEAR’S EVE
As we prepare to welcome the New Year, residents are urged to celebrate responsibly and follow the City of Johannesburg’s fireworks by-laws to keep everyone safe.
Fireworks can be fun, but when used incorrectly or at the wrong time, they can cause injuries, fires, trauma to animals and damage to property. The City has clear rules in place, and those who break them will be fined.
WHEN ARE FIREWORKS ALLOWED?
According to City by-laws:
• New Year’s Eve: Fireworks are only allowed between 23:00 and 01:00
• New Year’s Day: Fireworks are allowed from 19:00 to 22:00
Setting off fireworks outside these times is illegal and punishable by law.
FINES YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT
You will be fined if you are found:
• R500 for setting off fireworks outside the permitted times
• R1 500 for igniting fireworks near petrol stations, explosive factories, storage facilities or where animals are present
• R1 000 for setting off fireworks in a public place or along main roads (thoroughfares)
Fireworks are also strictly prohibited within 500 metres of petrol stations and other explosive sites.
FIREWORKS SAFETY MATTERS
Residents are reminded to:
• Never light fireworks near animals, as loud noises cause serious stress and harm
• Be considerate of neighbours, children, the elderly and people with sensitivities
• Avoid lighting fireworks in crowded or public areas
• Supervise children at all times and never allow them to handle fireworks alone
