MAYOR MORERO VISITS THEMBA KHOZA INFORMAL SETTLEMENT

The Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Dada Morero, visited the Themba Khoza Informal Settlement in Ivory Park on Monday following days of protest action by residents demanding formalisation and basic services.

Addressing the community, Mayor Morero committed to convening a meeting with ValueMax, the private landowner, to discuss the future of the land currently occupied by the settlement. He further promised to engage with the Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Environment and Infrastructure Services, Cllr Jack Sekwaila, regarding the urgent issue of electrification.

The Mayor assured residents that he would return on 14 September 2025 with feedback. He also urged the community to call off their strike in the meantime.

Residents of Themba Khoza have lived on the land for more than 22 years without access to water or electricity, and frustration has grown as newer informal settlements established after Themba Khoza have already received temporary electrification.

While MMC for Housing, Cllr Mlungisi Mabaso, previously promised the community relocation to land near Rabie Ridge, Mayor Morero made no mention of this commitment. Instead, his focus remained on engaging with the private property owner and MMC Sekwaila.
