The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) conducted citywide scholar transport operations to safeguard learners and enforce full compliance with road safety regulations.

The operation took place on Tuesday, 19 January 2026, during which officers inspected vehicle roadworthiness, driver Professional Driving Permits (PrDPs), licensing, and overloading. The intervention formed part of JMPD’s proactive efforts to ensure learners were transported safely to and from school.

According to JMPD, the operation reinforced a zero-tolerance approach to non-compliance, particularly where children’s lives were placed at risk.

LEARNER SAFETY REMAINED A PRIORITY

The Public Safety Department reiterated that the safety and protection of children must always come first, in line with Section 28(1) of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, which places the best interests of the child at the centre of all decisions affecting them.

Parents and guardians were urged to prioritise lawful and safe scholar transport services and to ensure that vehicles transporting their children were roadworthy and driven by properly licensed drivers.

Transport operators were warned to comply fully with regulations or face serious consequences.

JMPD confirmed that any driver found overloading learners would face immediate fines and vehicle impoundment, in line with road safety regulations.

The enforcement operation followed tragic news from Vanderbijlpark, where 12 learners lost their lives after a scholar transport accident occurred on Monday, 19 January 2026.

The incident sent shockwaves across Gauteng and renewed calls for stricter monitoring and enforcement of scholar transport services to prevent further loss of life.
