Gauteng Department of Education Opens Registration for May/June 2026 Second Chance Matric Programme

The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) has officially opened registration for the May/June 2026 Second Chance Matric Support Programme, urging eligible candidates to act quickly as the registration deadline is Friday, 6 February 2026.

The programme is aimed at learners and adults who want to improve their previous matric results or complete their Grade 12 qualification, offering a renewed opportunity for academic and career advancement.

“It is time to rewrite your future,” the department said, emphasising that the Second Chance Matric Programme is designed to support candidates preparing for the upcoming May/June examinations.

Who Qualifies to Apply?

Candidates must first identify which category they fall under, as registration processes differ.

National Senior Certificate (NSC) Repeater Candidates

This category applies to candidates who have previously written Grade 12 and wish to rewrite subjects to improve their marks.

The GDE stressed that registration for NSC candidates is manual only, and there is no online registration option.

Candidates must register at a registered examination centre or a GDE District Office. Subject changes are not allowed, and candidates must meet all School-Based Assessment (SBA), oral and practical requirements where applicable. A valid South African ID is compulsory for registration.

Senior Certificate (SC) – Adult Learners

The Senior Certificate (SC) category applies to adult learners aged 21 and older, as well as out-of-school youth aged 18 to 21 with written approval from the provincial head of department.

SC candidates may register manually or online via the eServices platform. To qualify, applicants must have a GETC, Grade 9 or Standard 7 report, or an equivalent recognised qualification.
