Parents of learners from Dulcie September Primary School in Rabie Ridge took their frustrations directly to the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) on Monday, 16 February 2026, staging a protest outside the Department’s Johannesburg offices.

The parents demanded urgent intervention at the school, calling for the delivery of additional classrooms, proper flushing toilets and maintenance of the school grounds, including cutting of overgrown grass. The demonstration follows weeks of complaints about unsafe and unhygienic conditions at the school, which KAE News previously reported on.

Department Responds

After KAE News submitted formal media questions, GDE spokesperson Steve Mabona confirmed the Department is aware of the situation.

According to Mabona, mobile classrooms at the school had previously been repaired around June 2025.

“Although doors and windows of mobile classes were repaired around June 2025, they were later vandalised by learners,” Mabona said.

He added that officials have since visited the school and committed to addressing the concerns raised by parents.

“Officials visited that school and committed to fix and also fast-track a process to deliver mobile toilets in due course.”

Permanent School Planned

The Department further confirmed that the school has been approved for a permanent brick-and-mortar structure.

“It must be noted that the said school is approved for a brick-and-mortar structure. Accordingly, the construction company has already been introduced to the school community,” Mabona explained.

Parents and the Department have reportedly agreed that teaching and learning should continue while interventions are being implemented.

KAE News will continue monitoring developments and follow up with the Department regarding the permanent school infrastructure.
